1) You’re well-rested.
Sleep has an astounding effect on how well we write. This fact becomes most clear around 2 p.m. when we’re slumped over in our office chairs, sneaking an extra square of chocolate and guiltily debating how many cups of coffee a day equals too much.
When your brain is focused on making it through the day without committing some atrocious mistake due to distraction or allowing your body to curl up under your desk for a good snooze, there isn’t space for a lot of profound thought. That’s why morning is an ideal time to write. Instead of plummeting toward nap land, your brain is awakening, moving into the day, and just starting to buzz with vibrant ideas and renewed energy.
2) Your ideas are at their freshest.
First thing in the morning is a magical time before the day begins and you’re flooded with an onslaught of input, much of which comes from the digital sphere. Your smartphone, your web browser, that chatty guy in the elevator—whether you realize it or not, each one of them has an impact on your thoughts.
But before any of that occurs, your thoughts are your own, and they are in the freshest, purest state they will reach all day. Not to say you can’t have a brilliant epiphany mid-afternoon, but that tends to be the exception rather than the rule.
3) Life feels full of possibilities.
Let’s be honest, sometimes by the end of the day, we head home feeling pretty discouraged. Not enough got done. That big project just didn’t turn out right. And gosh, now you’re already thinking about what to cook for dinner and how to get up early enough to meet your next deadline.
Needless to say, with so many pieces of the puzzle dancing around in your head, gathering your thoughts to write an amazing blog post is going to be ten times as hard. So instead, check it off your list first thing in the morning when you’re fully recharged and full of optimism.
